The Domino Chick
AdminP ini variable
Monday, January 30th, 2006
I need to write a complete wrap-up of Lotusphere this week. I had planned to do it over the weekend, but I barely had time to breathe. I flew home from Orlando on Friday and turned around and flew to Boston on Sunday morning. So I decided to spend that precious 36 hours at home away from the computer. I'm sure you all understand. Those of you who attended the AdminP "Meet the Geeks" session on Wednesday night may remember some discussion about a server-side ini variable that will help AdminP requests process faster. There is a technote on this, 1174405, that explains what the resolution is. This issue relates to renames or deletions in ACLs taking a long time to process and was occurring when multiple ACL rename/deletions were taking place. The rename/delete in ACL process uses a particular semaphore, which is the same semaphore that is used by the Delegate Mail File request (essentially, any modification to the ACL by an AdminP request uses that semaphore). The semaphore would get locked by each rename or deletion, so all the other requests would have to wait until each rename/deletion was completed. This fix and ini variable batches renames and deletions together so that if there are multiple renames or deletions waiting to be processed, and AdminP encounters a database that contains all of those names in an ACL, it processes all changes for that particular database at the same time, instead of making each change individually for each request. The ini variable is:
ADMINP_ENABLE_CASCADE_DESIGN_ELEMENTS=1
and applies to 6.0.5/6.5.4 and later.

Lotusphere 2006 Highlights - so far
Wednesday, January 25th, 2006
As I sit here thinking about all of the great sessions I've seen and people I've talked to here at Lotusphere, I can't decide whether I can't believe it's already Wednesday or if I can't believe it's only Wednesday. This year at Lotusphere has been so packed with content already that it's almost surreal to think that there are still two full days of content ahead of us. On the other hand, I'm enjoying my time with my fellow speakers, Lotusphere staff, and attendees so much that I don't want it to end.Because I'm a track manager, meaning that I'm responsible for choosing some of the sessions at Lotusphere, I've been especially interested in what attendees think this year. Overwhelmingly, everyone I've spoken to is having a great time, their only dilemma being that there are so many good sessions to choose from that it's hard to make a decision which to attend! Many attendees I've spoken with have told me that they've learned a lot already and are looking forward to soaking in more information throughout the week, and that they're loving the evening events too. When I ask what their favorite thing about Lotusphere '06 is, the two things I keep hearing over and over are: BootCamp and JamFest. Both are new for Lotusphere '06 and I'm happy to report that they are big hits!
Session highlights for Wednesday: Ed's always popular sessions: ID401 - The Boss Loves Microsoft: Where Does That Leave Lotus? and ID120 - How to "Sell" IBM Lotus Notes and Domino Inside Your Organization. The former is 10-11 AM and the latter is at 1:30-2:30 PM, both in the Dolphin.
Also, be sure to check out Paul Mooney and Wild Bill Buchan's session: BP106 - Worst Practices in IBM Lotus Domino - Learning From the Mistakes of Others. I had the pleasure of Paul's company at lunch yesterday, and the dubious honor of being distracted by the crazy Scotsman in a kilt while talking with Libby of LotusUserGroup.org on Monday, and I know their session will be not only informative, but very, very entertaining. They're on at 8:30 this morning in the Dolphin, with a repeat Thursday at 8:30 (which I'll be attending, since I'm speaking this morning) in the Swan.
And, last but not least, in the shameless self-promotion department, I'm delivering two sessions today with my esteemed colleague Susan: HND102 - Domino Domain Monitoring Hands-On. It's actually one session, but it's being repeated in the afternoon. It's in Swan Osprey 2, right next door to my colleagues Rob Gearhart and Elliott Harden, who will be delivering their presentation HND101 - A Hands-On Guide to IBM Lotus Domino Server Troubleshooting and Crash Analysis. Both hands-on sessions will be from 8:30-10:15 AM with a repeat from 2:30-4:15 PM. We intend to have an applause war with our neighbors, so please drop by and join in. After all that excitement, we'll be rounding out the day by facilitating MTG607 - AdminP in Lotus Domino, in Swan Dove, and then heading on over to the Lotusphere party at Sea World.
Whew! Wednesday is a busy day! Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow, especially from the closing general session - there are some great things to be announced there and I'll make every attempt to liveblog them.

This room is where it’s at
Tuesday, January 24th, 2006
On Sunday, Susan and I delivered our first session in the Dolphin in Southern Hemisphere I. The room was notable not just for its size but because the sound guy is really awesome AND he's named Tom Jones. Anyway, I headed back over there this morning to catch a great BootCamp session by Rob Gearhart on tuning Domino memory usage, and checked the schedule - every single session in that room today is absolutely a must-see! I felt like I could stay in there all day long, and not just because I'm presenting there later today. Let's take a look at the sessions (will link later):8:30 AM - 9:30 AM - ID111 - Tuning Memory Usage on Your IBM Lotus Domino Server
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM - ID112 - Using IBM Lotus Domino Domain Monitoring in the Real World
11:15 AM - 12:15 PM - ID104 - Best Practices Upgrading to IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 7 in Your Production Environment (R1 - this one was overflowing as of a few minutes after 11, so be sure to get there early for the repeat if you missed it)
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM - AD208 - Bridging Worlds with the IBM Lotus Domino JSP Tag Library
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM - ID115 - Lotus Domino: An Intimate Relationship with Memory, CPUs and Storage
4:15 PM - 5:15 PM - ID113 - Maximize the Power of AdminP in IBM Lotus Domino (highly recommended, since I am one of the speakers)
All the sessions are amazing and this is shaping up to be the best Lotusphere I can remember in a long time. Remember to stop by and say hi!

Liveblogging Lotusphere!
Sunday, January 22nd, 2006
Right now, I'm sitting onstage in DL Southern Hemisphere I getting ready for my first Lotusphere session. Susan and I have three laptops with 6 Domino servers on them, and we're about ready to deliver JMP103 - IBM Lotus Domino Administrator Jumpstart. Never fear, though - if you are reading this after 12:30 pm and you missed it, the session will be repeated today at 4 PM in DL Southern Hemisphere III.We have the blogmonkey with us, and as you can see from the photos in the photoblog stream, he's already been up to some mischief. He plans to visit many speakers here at Lotusphere, so keep an eye on this space to see the blogmonkey visit your favorite speakers. I'll also post photos from around Lotusphere - in fact, I'm going to post one right now of the attendees filing in for the session. If you're here, stop by and say hi during the week!

2005 - Year in review
Monday, January 2nd, 2006
I'm going to steal Ed's format for this year in review because I love bulleted lists like nothing else. If I could marry bulleted lists, I would. Anyway.I didn't blog as much as I would have liked to this year, and I heard about it from a lot of people, customers included. (Thanks, Steven! I can always count on you for a good heckling. And sorry about the misspelling!) I hate to use my constant travel as an excuse, but I will - it's difficult for me to find enough left over brain matter to conjure up something interesting most of the time. But really, the reason for the lack of blogging is that this year has been such a complete rollercoaster for me. I've been pretty much off-balance the whole year. Some really amazing, wonderful things have happened, and some really awful things have happened. I haven't talked about most of these things here, because I like to keep things light, fun, and full of monkeys. So I'll throw out some highlights for you. And some monkeys.

Wishes for 2006

I wish everyone a happy, healthy, successful 2006. I want to thank all of my friends and colleagues for being there for me this year and I hope next year will be even more amazing than this one.
